BORO TEXTILES WORKSHOP WITH ZOE HILLYARD
Originating amongst the farming communities of northern Japan in the late 1800’s, Boro textiles developed out of necessity, with functional stitching used to create practical and insulating fabrics reusing the materials around them. Their wonderfully rugged beauty lies in the uniquely worn surfaces showing layers of history, patched irregularity and wonderfully unselfconscious stitch, all the result of happenstance than planning.
Italy makes a perfect setting for a relaxing exploration of Boro, creating seductive and unique surfaces by reworking fabrics that hold personal meaning and memories. You will return home with textile work that either has a functional use or that can be framed and that hopefully is rich with history and happy memories.
