BFI London Film Festival
Oct 10 – Oct 21 all-day

An epic 225 features from 77 countries screened in London over 12 days. BFI London Film Festival website here.

Thanks very much indeed to Asian Movie Pulse – who have listed all the Asian films at the festival here.

Films from Japan:

Mirai by Scr Mamoru Hosoda (Japan)

LFF favourite Mamoru Hosoda’s (The Boy and the Beast, Wolf Children) rapturous and fantastical take on childhood is an animation of great beauty and insight.

Of Love & Law by Hikaru Toda (UK-Japan-France)

Hikaru Toda’s involving documentary reveals the hidden side of Japanese society, highlighting the diverse human-rights work done by the country’s first LGBT law firm.

Asako I & II by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Japan-France)

Do we ever really get over our first love? Asako is about to find out, in this quirky romantic drama with a dash of the uncanny.

Brave Blossoms: the History of Rugby in Japan @ World Rugby Museum, Twickenham Stadium
Nov 17 2018 – Aug 31 2019 all-day

WRM_BraveBlossomsExplore the full history of the birth and evolution of rugby union in Japan, from 1866 when Yokohama became the site of the oldest rugby club in Asia, to being awarded Rugby World Cup 2019.

This special exhibition, produced in partnership with England Rugby Travel and Kanto District Transport Bureau, charts the evolution of rugby alongside the development of modern Japan. How ‘the father of Japanese rugby’, Ginosuke Tanaka, brought the sport to Keio University and how a series of sporting pioneers, including members of the Japanese Royal Family, allowed the sport to flourish. It will examine how Japanese corporations have nurtured the game at a domestic level allowing Japanese rugby to make significant impacts at international level, and culminating in the famous victory the Brave Blossoms achieved over the Springboks at Rugby World Cup 2015 and the awarding of Rugby World Cup 2019 to Japan.

World Rugby Museum adult ticket £12.50. Concessions available.

Monograph – Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel
Jul 27 @ 7:00 pm
Monograph - Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel

A secret multi-course Japanese dinner with audio / visual experiences whilst meeting new people in an art gallery in east London.
And you can bring your own booze x

For this new concept we have hired an art gallery in a warehouse conversion 4 min walking from Whitechapel station to host our most ambitious Japanese dining experience with the feeling of a trip to Tokyo and where sounds and images blur the line between real and unreal.

About the menu

The dinner will start with a watercress salad with sesame dressing. The creamy, sweet and nutty dressing is made by blending sesame seeds, rapeseed oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce and sugar.
The smokiness and umami of katsuobushi (bonito flakes) adds complexity to the dish.

We will then be serving the square-shaped, incredibly silky and firm Sanuki udon with an umami-rich dashi broth, citrus-marinated Scottish smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds.

The following course will be a fresh contrast of textures, featuring soft tofu, grated ginger and katsuobushi.
A refreshing summery dish that we find works particularly well after the richness of the udon.

The last course will be a selection of Japanese sweets: matcha dorayaki (the Japanese interpretation of the pancake, filled with green tea powder custard), chocolate mochi (a thin layer of glutinous rice enclosing a chocolate ganache) and aka daifuku (a glutinous rice cake filled with anko, a sweet azuki bean paste)

Menu

Watercress salad with sesame dressing

Udon noodles with smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds

Soft tofu with grated ginger and katsuobushi

Matcha dorayaki, chocolate mochi, aka daifuku
