Summer Explorers! Manga Comes To Life @ British Library, Knowledge Centre Theatre

Love Japanese films and passionate about manga? This special film season will satisfy both cravings!

Manga is an art medium which has enjoyed widespread popularity both at home in Japan, as well as globally abroad, for many decades now. Countless Japanese filmmakers have reached for it as a source of inspiration due to its narrative nature which explores intricate storylines as well as animated characters. Much like literature, manga is a mirror reflecting the realities and ideas of the Japanese society.

From over the top, offbeat narratives of psychic teenagers and upstart political wrangling in a high school environment, to spectacular battles between good and evil, and stories of tender friendships Summer Explorers 2019 : Manga Comes To Life – Live Action Japanese Film Based on Manga showcases the range of plotlines that this graphic art has provided film creatives. Come and see the versatility of the influence that manga has had on Japanese cinema!

Presented and Curated by the Japan Foundation, in collaboration with the British Library.

Monograph – Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel

Monograph - Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel

A secret multi-course Japanese dinner with audio / visual experiences whilst meeting new people in an art gallery in east London.
And you can bring your own booze x

For this new concept we have hired an art gallery in a warehouse conversion 4 min walking from Whitechapel station to host our most ambitious Japanese dining experience with the feeling of a trip to Tokyo and where sounds and images blur the line between real and unreal.

About the menu

The dinner will start with a watercress salad with sesame dressing. The creamy, sweet and nutty dressing is made by blending sesame seeds, rapeseed oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce and sugar.
The smokiness and umami of katsuobushi (bonito flakes) adds complexity to the dish.

We will then be serving the square-shaped, incredibly silky and firm Sanuki udon with an umami-rich dashi broth, citrus-marinated Scottish smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds.

The following course will be a fresh contrast of textures, featuring soft tofu, grated ginger and katsuobushi.
A refreshing summery dish that we find works particularly well after the richness of the udon.

The last course will be a selection of Japanese sweets: matcha dorayaki (the Japanese interpretation of the pancake, filled with green tea powder custard), chocolate mochi (a thin layer of glutinous rice enclosing a chocolate ganache) and aka daifuku (a glutinous rice cake filled with anko, a sweet azuki bean paste)

Menu

Watercress salad with sesame dressing

Udon noodles with smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds

Soft tofu with grated ginger and katsuobushi
