JIZAI by Haruo Mitsuta @ Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation
Apr 17 @ 9:30 am – May 14 @ 5:00 pm
JIZAI by Haruo Mitsuta @ Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is delighted to introduce the unique works of the acclaimed Japanese artist Haruo Mitsuta to the UK public.

Mitsuta is the only contemporary artist who makes Jizai Okimono (“articulated animals”) – flexible animal figures made from metal pieces, which can replicate the movements of the original animals. Originally they were made by armourers in the late Edo and the Meiji period.

Jizai Okimono have gained some recognition within Japan in recent years, but still belong to a very minor area of traditional Japanese metallic handicrafts. The vast majority of these items were sold abroad, so this exceptional form of art never had the chance to develop its roots within Japan, where it originated. Its presence may have been long lost in the Japanese art scene, but these objects have been collected and cherished by many people outside Japan.

Mitsuta will be showcasing some of his most impressive and startlingly realistic pieces in this exhibition.

Monograph – Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel

Monograph - Japanese supper club @ Secret warehouse conversion in Whitechapel

A secret multi-course Japanese dinner with audio / visual experiences whilst meeting new people in an art gallery in east London.
And you can bring your own booze x

For this new concept we have hired an art gallery in a warehouse conversion 4 min walking from Whitechapel station to host our most ambitious Japanese dining experience with the feeling of a trip to Tokyo and where sounds and images blur the line between real and unreal.

About the menu

The dinner will start with a watercress salad with sesame dressing. The creamy, sweet and nutty dressing is made by blending sesame seeds, rapeseed oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce and sugar.
The smokiness and umami of katsuobushi (bonito flakes) adds complexity to the dish.

We will then be serving the square-shaped, incredibly silky and firm Sanuki udon with an umami-rich dashi broth, citrus-marinated Scottish smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds.

The following course will be a fresh contrast of textures, featuring soft tofu, grated ginger and katsuobushi.
A refreshing summery dish that we find works particularly well after the richness of the udon.

The last course will be a selection of Japanese sweets: matcha dorayaki (the Japanese interpretation of the pancake, filled with green tea powder custard), chocolate mochi (a thin layer of glutinous rice enclosing a chocolate ganache) and aka daifuku (a glutinous rice cake filled with anko, a sweet azuki bean paste)

Menu

Watercress salad with sesame dressing

Udon noodles with smoked mackerel and mixed seaweeds
